Message from Paul Melling

Over many years now we have run an Assistant Instructor scheme, this scheme helps Ardwhallan to deliver cost effective courses to young people on the Island. The AI scheme is about having a fun filled year, meeting new people, learn new skills, building experience and gaining qualifications. The Assistant Instructors work under the supervision of a mentor and training objectives are set during the course of sessions as they gain more experience. Training focuses upon all aspects of the role of Group Instructor, ranging from food preparation, to the cleaning of equipment and obviously the hard skills such as Kayaking, Sailing, Climbing to name but a few. This programme encompass training in both the technical ability and soft skills needed when teaching young people in the outdoors. The Assistant Instructors are encouraged to follow National Governing Body training and assessment courses (dependent on their aspirations, ability and progress). This scheme has now had over 30 participants over the past 8yrs, funding this scheme has relied on corporate sponsorship and over the past 2 years we have been lucky enough to receive this funding from the IOM Masonic Charity.

This year sees the Masonic Charitable Foundation see its 300th anniversary, they are celebrating this landmark with the MCF Community Awards. We have been lucky enough to have been selected as one of 4 charities on the Island. If successful we have the possibility of gaining anything from £4,000 to £25,000 to put forward to a project of our choice. In our application to the Foundation we have said we would like to expand on the already successful AI scheme and take on from this 2 full-time paid apprentice rolls. Having these extra staff would enhance our offer to schools and give the participant valuable experience working as part of a team and gaining valuable experience.

For us to gain the grant, We need your vote! All 4 charities on the Island have been tasked with collecting as many public votes as we can in the month of July. Attached to this email is flyer, if possible could print this out and place it in your staffroom, Mention us in the school news letter and any other stream of publicity, we need to encourage as many people to vote as possible, your help will help us reach out again to the a wider audience.
